10 Tips To Keep Your Dog Safe For The 4th Of July

Like many Americans, you may plan to have a festive 4th of July. Whether you plan on staying in, hosting a party, or leaving the house for the day, it’s a stressful time for any loving pet parent. According to PetAmberAlert.com, we lose more pets on the 4th of July than on any other day of the year. Keeping your dog calm can be a challenge, but here are 10 tips to help your 4 legged family member.

  1. Leave the stereo, TV, and AC on to provide background noise. Especially if you plan on leaving for a couple of hours, blocking out the loud noises is crucial to decrease the stress on your pet.
  2. Keep your pet indoors at all times. If you’re someone who is hosting, going out for the day, or staying in, never leave your friend unsupervised outdoors.
  3. Consider exercising your pet early in the day. We want our pets to be as sleepy as possible. What better way to do that than exercise.
  4. Make sure your pets have identification tags with up-to-date information.
  5. If you’re hosting guests, ask them to help monitor your pets to make sure they don’t escape. Again, make sure everyone knows you need your pet to be inside at all times.
  6. Create a safe haven for your dog. Consider a quiet space away from any windows so that they can’t hear or see fireworks. Provide your pup with familiar toys and treats.
  7. NEVER use fireworks around pets. Lit fireworks can pose a danger to curious pets and can cause burns or trauma to the face and paw. Unused/post-used fireworks can be hazardous. Some fireworks contain potentially toxic substances.
  8. Keep the curtains closed and shut the windows during fireworks to minimize sound.
  9. Try your best to return home during the louder and more celebratory hours of the night. Your pet(s) will feel a lot safer with you around, especially if you have a nervous dog.
  10. Think about boarding or hiring a pet sitter. Since we all can’t be there for our pets at all hours of the holiday, knowing your dog is safe will allow you to have a better time knowing your friend is being cared for.
